Can’t wait to picture your guests having fun!

Being that the booth is wheel chair accessible it became the perfect entertainment centerpiece for a recent Sweet 16.  Our birthday girl could go in as many times as she wanted to with 1, 2 or even 4 of her friends comfortably. 

At a recent party at the club Tenjune in NYC both adults and kids were having going crazy with our fantastic themes.

We’re now customizing themes for upcoming parties:  Air Jordan, Spring Flower fields, Hollywood Cinema.  There’s no limit to what we can do.

The dancing alone, the rush of excitement heated the place up where they had to open up the windows in there!  Alex (Sam’s mom) said that her guests were going to dance but WOW! 

This was an all out fun party with packed dance floor for every dance set straight to the end. 

So many highlights of this party to comment on.  First the hospitality of Bubby’s, they couldn’t be more gracious.  Tiffany McCord. the Events Coordinator at Bubby’s was wonderful.  We’ve worked with kind folks and the other types and Tiffany typifies someone we hope we would be able to work with at every event.

Sam is a young man of many talents and abilities.  He carries a cool confidence and enough swag to be instantly someone you’d like to be friends with.  He is down to earth but can dance and jump with the best.

Andy (dad) created one of the all time great video features for Sam that I’ve ever seen.  It was 15 minutes long and you couldn’t look away.  Compiled and edited over a hundred hours it captured everything leaving no stone unturned. 

If you’ve ever seen an awards show tribute it felt like that.  Kudos and cheers to Andy for that uplifting piece.

Now the party!  What?!!!  Sheer Dancing Joy.  Crazy, funny, original lunacy, smiling faces everywhere.  Pockets of families dancing.   The little ones doing the Curly Shuffle on the floor.  Grandmothers taking solos!  Just Amazing fun.  My face hurt from laughing and smiling so much.

And yet this was one for the ages!  Not only did the adults join in on Coke and Pepsi, for the first time in our history, an adult team WON!  We’re calling Guinness this morning to see if that goes in the Mitzvah book of World Records. Which if there isn’t a book, should be written.

Congratulations to Sam, Alex, Andy, Charlie and Nell, to your friends and family, the grandmothers, the Park Slope community, colleagues all for making this a very special night.

There are hundreds and easily thousands of companies doing mitzvahs, weddings, and private event entertainment in our treasured NYC metro area. 

Like in any industry there are some that are simply not very good.   Some that aspire to be great and are work hard, but need some time.  And some are quite good at their job, even considered great and consistent with their performances. 

And then there are handfuls like in any industry that just stand out. These companies rise above.  You’ve seen it.  You recognize it.  These are the elite artists. 

Before Cirque du Soleil there was just the circus.  Some great ones. Some fun ones. But Cirque brought a artistry, passion and heart to their acts that I personally never saw before.  It wasn’t just that they could do crazy neat new things.  They want to completely grab us and mesmerize us.  They want to leave an indelible impression.

And that they do.  With exquisite direction they become elite artists. They definitely grabbed me and apparently millions of others that as well.

Blue Man Group did the same thing.  Took music and innovated it into interactive performance.  This was particular thrilling for me because I worked and hung out with those 3 guys back in our humble struggling days as catering waiters in NYC.

Elite, when it comes to mitzvahs, weddings and special event entertainment, isn’t so much about music, energy and spectacle, and the next great lighting or decor piece of awesomeness, because most companies can supply that.  Those are tools we use.

In the end, it’s how they are used and the people that make the impact that lasts.

An artist for me is someone who reaches through to people with their passion and talent…Touches them in a place that they always remember that experience and would always enjoy having it again.  Why millions of recordings are sold.

To be an Elite Artist in special event entertainment such as mitzvahs, weddings and corporate events in my opinion, comes down to the desire, ability, skill, direction, spirit to reach through and connect people to the best part of themselves.   

If you watch DJ companies videos to do your research , you may have noticed it’s either a musical montage or if they show raw video (unedited) you’ll see MCs and performers going all OUT.  There’s a high energy push and if you listen you might notice a monotone voice that DRIVES and urges the guests to Go.  

Sometimes it feels like a powerful machine driving… “C’MON!” often being a one word sentence like a whip.  It’s a high energy party agenda and that’s where they’re going – push down the accelerator. 

I’m all for high energy exhilarating parties, we all want that.  The key word is exhilarating.  Do you just go with it or do you feel hesitant?  How do we get to the good feeling places?

In many of the videos it can often feel like there is just a piece missing from the whole.  You may not be able to put your finger on it.  I think of it as the Why.  Why are we doing this?  As I’m watching I am asking do I feel compelled to want to ENJOY myself by the MC. 

Remembering the WHY.

Sometimes if you look at the guests, not the entertainment, it tells a different story.  You see people not quite matching the energy of the performers, or disengaged, even sometimes looking dazed or confused.  I just watched one today and the Bat Mitzvah girl herself was literally physically wincing at the MC’s commands.  He was doing his thing barking out motivation and he completely lost her.  Finally he caught on after about 4 winces and took her hand trying to calm her down, which was a good move on his part.

That’s a company pushing the mission of “Party” at all costs, instead of FEELING the Party and engaging in the celebration.

This what I would call disconnection is a distinctive difference between the Elite Artist and the performer.  They can still be very good at what they do, they just maybe miss the artistic awareness, experience, wisdom or care to be completely in tune with their crowd, and uplift them in a more natural joyful way.

We don’t demand it.  We attract it. 

And that’s where LSNY has created a distinction.  A great artist in special events is attuned and listening to his audience as he plays.  I’m incredibly proud of our performers because it’s been the soul of what we do.  We really get that distinction. 

They love that we get to do this.  It FEELS better to everyone particularly the guests.  The exhilaration comes because everyone is free to experience it.

We start with appreciation and offer an invitation to join in with us.  From the very beginning in 1991 we brought in the greatest genuine artists we could and dedicated our performance toward raising spirits.  We’re not just having a party we ’re celebrating your life.   To be able to do this as a career is incredible to say the least.  To be able to do it well comes down to direction, artistry and care of our people. 

Music, lighting, dancers, video, decor, entertainers all create the spark, interest and excitement, but to be TRULY compelling  like the Elite Artists one has to take off the automatic cruise control and be fully present and open with your heart.   This melts away any of the unwanted stuff and just leaves all the good stuff.

There are some groups that are completely ready to go wild at the start and will thrive on high energy.  There are others that are maybe a bit more reserved, that need some wooing, kindness, appreciation, and warming up to get there. 

If a company can be present, recognize and start with that and take them from wherever the guests are to the peak of excitement without MAKING or COERCING them to go there, then the energy in that room is fully true, ALIVE and extraordinary.  It pulsates.  It FEELS different.  Fresher.  Lighter.  More Joyful.   When this happens the company has positively raised the group’s energy and spirit.

This is what the Elite Artists in our industry are able to give to their clients.

2011 which was by all accounts from many was a challenging year, brought with it some very memorable moments.

We recently received this beautiful picture of Lori and Tony from their August wedding. 

It brought back some fond memories of wonderful weddings over the last few years.  Many of them coming from wedding we’ve done years ago.

The mitzvahs and coroporate events, holiday parties were a blast.  Our final holiday party of the year for Madison Physical Therapy & Occupational Therapy at Mama Rao’s.  Sal the man in charge at Mama Rao’s is a fantastic gentleman and really looks to make it a festive fun time for his guests.

turned out to be beyond even my expectations.  They went with an original idea to have the Ultimate Games Master for 4 hours.  Nearly every employee and their guests participated in the challenges (additional video here).  There was something for everyone.

You can really see the versatility of the Games Masters when it works so well for both adults and kids.  It was our second year at the NYU School of Medicine Holiday Brunch in Manhattan with the Ultimate Games Master Team. 

More than 250 kids of all ages, with their parents.  This year we added Simon Says, and a little dance party toward the end, with our tradional interactive games.  The great thing about this event headed by the infinitely organized and amazing Brad McFarland of NYUMC is that he makes sure everyone has something to enjoy, eat, engage with and be entertained by. 

The introduction of the coolest new photo booth, the Lightning Photo Booth added to the fun late in the year.  It was featured in the MitzvahMarket.com new finds for December which has introduced LSNY to a whole new range of clients.

We’re looking forward to 2012 with some cool new offerings we unveiled at the December parties. 

The elegant new video screens and white stages. 

Our super MCs Yarnell and Brian Smooth being requested for more events, and reintroducing Mitzvah Branding for our clients to help them create even the most personalized parites that makes them unique and memorable.

The New LSNY Events Screen looked amazing with Marin's name animated in lights

The afternoon was sparkling from the very beginning.  The Jumeirah Essex House Ballroom was bedazzled inLavender which was Marin’s theme color of the day. 

The 72″ rear projected Screens displayed projected screens had Congratulations Marin elegantly displayed and the anticipation of monumental day lingered in the air as friends and family begun tricking in.

Later live photos, cool animations and the montage of Marin through her life were featured as the party went on. 

The Ultimate Games Master Skills and Games started off the afternoon for the kids, in the main ballroom while the adults mingled in the Petite Salon.  But we found many adults were interested in hanging in the “fun” room and trying out the Woggler, and Baseball Toss games. 

The Lightning Photo Booth was a big hit all afternoon long as both  kids and adults came over to pick through the Green Screen Themes and signed the Photo Album for Marin.

At the end of the dance they hoisted Marin high above their heads to a wildly cheering crowd.  All men looked like heros to their individual families, but beyond that it set the tone for one of the most upbeat, fun and exciting parties of the year.

A little of the pre-party cocktail festivities October 29th, 2011.  This date will live a long time in peoples’ minds on the east coast as the day that outdid Hurricane Irene for weather drama.  The noreaster came up the east coast and reaked havoc in a way the meterologists were warning us Irene would be doing, but really didn’t do. 

Who would ever predict a foot of snow (in some places) a few days before Halloween.  Attention ghosts and ghoblins they’ll be no Trick or Treat this year.  Mother Nature’s spoken.

At 3pm as I was leaving to get to my 6:30pm mitzvah for Sofie Gallant at the Prospect Park Picnic House, I had just opened my driver’s side door and heard strange ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ sound looked up and watched a cable snap swing down like a Hollywood special effect and land in front of my driveway.  A live wire.

I had my wife call 911 as the sparks flamed similarly to lava falling into the ocean…still on fire but steaming at the same time.  Then it occured to me I have to get out of my driveway or they’re going to ground me here. 

How do I get off my driveway without touching that live power line.  Unfortunately I didn’t do all the well in chemistry in school, but something told me rubber tires may be safe if I touch it.  Then figuring I could maybe get over my lawn, I’ll try to go over my 1′ high wood planking flanking my driveway and bypass the issue.

So off I went.  Whoops.  The combination of the snow and the plank kept pushing me back into the driveway.  I kept trying to get over but it simply became an obstacle too high to hop.  My car was pushed back toward the live wire.  I had no choice but to try to make it by.

I have to say I was lucky because cars in the street were still moving and it was slippery even for 4 wheel drive vehicles.  My vehicle spun from the effort trying to get over the plank and then I realized I was in traffic.  Spinning.  Thanks to much more careful drivers there was not an incident.

I stopped off at Panera because I had eaten early in the day and knew it was going to be a long one.  Panera’s computers were down so they were not serving anyone.  I ran to the pizza place but opted not to get anything after standing there thinking about the weather and how bad it was.

Got back to my car and upon turning the ignition got no start.  I tried again and it gave me a limp flicker.  I thought to myself, “Oh no, the wire shorted my electric or zapped my battery.”  3 more tries and my car coughed to life. 

Now inside I’m sweating.  Will I make it to Brooklyn? Will my car start again after I stop it? Will I stall on the way?  No choice now but to go.

On my way down RT. 4 toward the GWB it was 4 mph max.  Bumper to bumper.  What the heck were all these people doing out in this?  The worst weather day of the year? 

Ring.  Ring… my cell phone.  My DJ is in Prospect Park.  Workers stopped him and told him all activities have been cancelled.  The park is closed.  He said we have an event at the Picnic House.  They said it’s closed due to dangerous trees.

I call Barbara Gallant my client to see if she heard anything.  She picks up somewhat frazzled from the day.  I asked her and she said she’d heard nothing.  I recount the story of my phone call.  She gets very anxious.  I say let’s check it out because it may not be so – she’ll call the caterer.  But if it’s closed why don’t you call the temple to see if the space is available?  We can always move it there if need be.

She said she’ll call me back.  I’m still moving 4 mph.  My DJ texts me back in 10 minutes, “Good to go.”  I call Barbara immediately to give her the good news.  Barbara was frustrated with the whole of the day and events and just took a moment to vent.  I understood.  She had just been told that her party might have to be cancelled or possibly postponed.  That’s a logistical nightmare.

Dad, Scott was in fact over at Prospect Park actually cutting down trees and moving them off the road so guests and our crew could actually get in.  My windshield wipers fell stopped at two points while on the highway.  And each came off at different times.  I was really wondering if this would be the first party I’d miss by an act of God.

And as they said in Shakespeare in Love – “it all works out in the end.  How? Don’t know it just does.” We all arrived.  Guests, crew, catering staff, we all made it and as you can see from the video it was a stellar evening.  It was actually by all accounts, my staff included one of the best parties of the year.

You can see a triumphant Barbara in the Hora Chair.  That’s how I would have felt making it through all of that.  It’s one that I’m really glad I was at.  The Gallants made a great party for everyone and most of the time everyone was dancing. 

Sophie was a trooper.  One knee operation and hurt her other one dancing at her party, she was still the life of the night.  Congratulations to everyone who made that night possible and special.

PS:  My car started and I made it home to a power outage for 2 days.  But really happy!!!!!
